Descrizione

Il più grosso scheletro finora trovato è grande 4 m e largo 5 m. Il peso di questi animali era di circa due tonnellate. Parenti dell'odierna Dermochelys coriacea, gli Archelon erano però molto differenti dalla loro discendente: prima di tutto non potevano ritirarsi nel guscio, rendendole prede di rettili come il Tylosaurus; per difendersi da essi non usavano il becco, che serviva per mangiare crostacei e meduse, bensì le protuberanze sul carapace; inoltre, avevano delle piccole "unghie" sulle estremità delle pinne, segno della loro parentela con le tartarughe di terra.
